Sporadic Thoughts and Useless Knowledge - Volume LVXIX
A Friday string of thoughts
It is very difficult to make friends and keep them, especially as you age (after 40 let’s say).
There are a few that stick, many fade, and some that become a “stringing together a series of re-acquaintances with the same person.”
Finland is the only other country apart from India which have “hand-guns”.
Rest of the world, “paper”. IYKYK.
Today I learned that 50 Cent Adjusted for Inflation is currently at 110 Cent.
Speaking of 50 Cent, you must read this GQ article about him.
Also, this clip from his interview with Stephen Colbert:
Shrinkflation is a thing — gauge from the size of the Parle-G biscuit packet for INR 5.
They say it still costs INR 5, but what you get is way lesser than what you could, say in 1994.
There are words that describe a specific feeling, situation, or person that are not there in English.
You would have heard the Scandinavian words —
hygge (Denmark) — classic coziness, comfort in simple pleasures;
sisu (Finland) — grit, inner strength, unyielding determination in the face of hardship;
fika (Sweden) — which means take a break for coffee, but also means give pause, take a break, or stop and be mindful.
My favourite word is the Japanese tsundoku — collecting or hoarding books with the intention of reading — but not reading and letting them pile up.
Another word that I learnt, Italian this time, which might become another favourite, is sprezzatura — effortless elegance, or measured laziness, a practiced nonchalance.
